Brown County Jail is a 750-beds regional correctional facility in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. It houses about 698 inmates under the supervision of over 135 staff members. The Brown County Jail is operated by Brown County Sherriff, Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Federal U.S. Marshal, among other major agencies. Consequently, in addition to housing local offenders, the Brown County Jail holds more than 464 federal inmates daily. The largest population of inmates here are men, with just 19% of them being women.

Brown County Jail was founded in and named after Mt. Sterling, a popular associate justice at the Supreme court of Illinois.
