Like the Sheriff’s Office, the Calhoun County Jail is located in St. Matthews, Calhoun County, in the western part of South Carolina. It is a regional medium-security correctional facility with a capacity to accommodate roughly 64 inmates. On average, the jail gets around 40 bookings a month and houses all kinds of convicts, from adults to juveniles.
The Calhoun County Sheriff oversees operations in the Calhoun County Jail, with the Calhoun County Commission funding all functions in the facility. It’s also the Commission’s responsibility to determine the annual working budget and the number of staff working in the facility. As of today, not less than 25 staff members supervise the institution.
The jail’s primary function is to hold individuals in custody, especially those awaiting processing of their cases by the courts. And hence, detention in the Calhoun County Jail is generally not purposed to be punitive. The majority of individuals incarcerated in this facility are, in most cases, not yet declared guilty by the law and are therefore presumed innocent until then. However, the jail still houses inmates who have already undergone trial and are serving time, including federal inmates.

Inmate Commissary
The Calhoun County Jail administration offers a commissary service at the facility. Inmates can make purchases through the commissary on a specific day guided by the jail management using money deposited in their accounts. The facility doesn’t limit how much money an incarcerated individual can have in their account nor the amount of order they wish to place.
To place an order, inmates have to fill out and turn in the provided order forms. Some of the items incarcerated persons can acquire from the commissary include snacks, hygiene necessities, and stationery.
Visitors can transfer or deposit money to a convict’s account from the facility. Credit/debit cards and cash are the accepted forms of money deposit at the Calhoun County Jail.

Divisions of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office
The Calhoun County Sheriff Office is organized into divisions, each assigned specific functions and duties for better service and organization. Here’s what each division does:
Patrol Division
The patrol division helps patrol all roads and water bodies in Calhoun County. Besides that, our dedicated officers also help to apprehend violators of the law, suppress criminal activity, curb crime, preserve peace, and most importantly, protect life and property. The Sheriff’s Deputies assigned to run the division patrol around businesses, schools, and homes within the Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction to ensure paramount law and order in Calhoun County.
Investigations Division
This division is liable for investigating illegal activities or rather crimes reported within the Sheriff’s Office’s area of operation. Nonetheless, officers in this division can also help out other agencies in cases of crimes committed out of Calhoun County and in some way need investigative efforts from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department.
Besides following up on reported law violations, the division also initiates criminal activity investigations based on the available information and evidence. It’s also the division’s responsibility to recover and record data on stolen property, collect and preserve evidence, organize and secure case files on all previous and ongoing cases assigned to the department.
Administration
It’s the administrative division’s responsibility to record, store, distribute, process, and secure all records and information in the Sheriff’s Office. Executive roles such as budgeting, planning, and acquisition are also assigned to this division. Court Services Division
The state law assigns the Sheriff’s Office court duties. And through the court services division, all Sheriff functions in the different court systems are delivered. These include providing security to the courthouse grounds and building, service of civil process, conducting sheriff’s sales, pick up of mentally-ill persons, helping with transport of convicts, and handling other duties relating to judicial support and the court system. Moreover, deputies in this division also hold mental hearings along with civil evictions and executions.
Communications Division
Communication is, without a doubt, vital to the Sheriff’s Office. After all, this division is the link between the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Calhoun County. Staff from this section collect information on behalf of the administration from the field, coordinate responses to requests and calls for policing service and wanted persons.
It’s also the division’s responsibility to inquire about stolen property, maintain radio traffic data, communicate with the public through telephone, and conduct searches on the department’s computer system.
